The story behind the name
Malmö is Sweden's third largest city, and one of the largest cities in Scandinavia. It was probably founded in 1275, and originally named Malmhaug, meaning "Gravel pile" or "Ore Hill". For centuries it was Denmark's second biggest city, but in the 17th century, Malmö came into Swedish possession. Today it is a great shopping city and is closely connected with the Öresund bridge, Malmö Airport and the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia, the Turning Torso. In 2007 Malmö was ranked #4 in Grist Magazine's "15 Green Cities" list.
