Voss or Kari

Voss tarps are made of coated nylon or polyester and pack small, for hiking, bikepacking and camps you carry in. Kari tarps are made of technical cotton (65% polyester, 35% cotton), the same fabric as the Nordisk cotton tents, and are made to stand for days at a basecamp or next to a cotton tent. The difference in weight is large: a Voss 20 SI weighs 1.55 kg, a Kari 20 10.9 kg.

Voss tarps

  • Voss LW: 10D ripstop nylon with silicone coating, 2,000 mm hydrostatic head. Voss 2 LW Tentwing (230 x 184 cm, 100 g), Voss 5 LW (240 g) and Voss 7 LW Multi Tarp (390 x 240 cm, 280 g). See lightweight tarps.
  • Voss SI: 40D ripstop nylon with silicone coating, 3,000 mm. Voss 9 SI (285 x 310 cm, 800 g), 14 SI (430 x 320 cm, 1.1 kg) and 20 SI (430 x 460 cm, 1.55 kg).
  • Voss PU: PU coated polyester. Voss 9 PU (1.05 kg), 14 PU (1.5 kg) and 20 PU (2.05 kg).
  • Voss Diamond: 300 x 310 cm, shaped to fit tunnel tents as a covered porch. SI 500 g, PU 700 g, both 3,000 mm.
  • Voss Tech Tarp: 220 x 260 cm, ripstop nylon, 1.1 kg, made to be used as a shelter, hammock, stretcher or poncho.

Voss tarps come without poles and pegs.

Kari tarps

Kari tarps come in 8, 12, 20, 30 and 41 m², plus the Kari 10 and 20 Diamond, which are shaped to fit the entrance of Asgard tents. The Kari 8, 20, 30 and 41 and both Diamonds come with adjustable steel poles (220 to 260 cm), steel V-pegs and guy lines. The Kari Tech Mini (250 x 300 cm, 3.3 kg) belongs to the Colour my Adventure range with the Ydun Tech Mini and Asgard Tech Mini. See cotton tarps.

Tarp with a tent

A Kari attached to the entrance of a cotton tent gives a covered area to sit, eat and cook outside the tent. It also shades the tent, which reduces UV exposure, mildew and algae on the flysheet. Tarps connect to the cotton tents with carabiners at the connector points, stand alone on poles and guy lines, or hang between trees. The Voss Diamond does the same job for tunnel tents.

Water and care

Technical cotton has a 350 mm hydrostatic head and is water-repellent rather than waterproof: the cotton swells when it gets wet and closes the weave. Pitch it with good tension so rain runs off, and let a Kari dry completely before storage, because damp cotton gets mould. The coated Voss tarps are rated 2,000 mm (LW) and 3,000 mm (SI).

Bivy bag

The Jorund Tech Bivy Bag is a one-person bivy, 270 x 160 cm, with a nylon shell (10,000 mm hydrostatic head), a soft polyester lining and a full-length zip. It weighs 1.21 kg and is designed to be used as a sleeping bag, poncho, bivy or underquilt.

Poles and pegs

Tarp poles, pegs and guy lines are in tent accessories, and pack sacks for Kari tarps in tent spare parts.
