Length and height

As the sleeping bag and mat FAQ explains, a bag that is too big leaves more air to warm up, and one that is too small compresses the fill. It also advises choosing a bag whose stated body length is a little above the child's height. The Ides Junior Mummy extends to fit children up to 150 cm tall. The Bjarni Scout Mummy fits children up to 150 cm tall when shortened and up to 175 cm when extended. The Frigg Junior Blanket (also in Agave Green) has a fixed length of 160 cm for children up to 150 cm. Its 70 cm width at shoulders and feet gives restless sleepers room to turn.

Feel-good range

Kids' bags carry a feel-good range instead of comfort and limit temperatures. Check that the lower figure covers the coldest night you expect, and on chilly nights close the hood or thermal collar.

Down or synthetic

The Ides Junior is the only down model here, filled with European grey duck down (600+ cuin). Like every Nordisk down sleeping bag, it is hand-sewn in Nordisk's own factory in Görlitz, Germany. The Frigg Junior and the Bjarni Scout are synthetic sleeping bags with NorGuard S-PO 80® polyester fill. The Frigg Junior's filling is fast-drying, and its two-way zip opens the bag fully for use as a blanket.

Weight and pack size

At 560 g, the Ides Junior is the lightest bag here and packs to 16 x 33 cm. The Frigg Junior weighs 810 g and packs to 19 x 32 cm (19 x 26 cm compressed). The Bjarni Scout weighs 1.04 kg and packs to 22 x 35 cm (22 x 29 cm compressed), and since it extends to 175 cm, it suits older children.

A mat underneath

A sleeping mat insulates the child from the cold ground, and the higher its R-value, the better the insulation. For summer nights around 10 °C, our sleeping bag and mat FAQ gives an R-value under 2 as a guideline.

Repairs and next size

Children's bags can go to Care & Repair in Görlitz for repair, and the down-filled Ides Junior can be washed there. Most adult sleeping bags start at size M for a body height of 160-175 cm, while the Knuth ±0° Mummy also comes in Small for a body size up to 160 cm.
