Do you have any questions?
Don’t worry, with the help of our FAQ, you’ll find answers to almost everything.
Find an
ideal location. Your guests or friends would enjoy being close to amenities
such as running water, toilets, and a cooking area. Look for a flat area
with sufficient space for your tents.
Check out
the surroundings. If there are trees, ensure they provide shelter
from the prevailing wind direction without dripping resin or other tree sap
onto the tents. If the area has grass, ensure it can be trimmed based on your
setup. In a windy area, take precautions for windy days. If it's very
exposed to the sun, consider UV exposure. While your
guests won't mind the sun due to the breathable fabric, some shade
could benefit the fabric in the long run. Plan for proper
drainage during heavy rainfall to prevent water from collecting under or inside
the tents.
Opting for a wooden platform is recommended. We don’t have a specific blueprint for this because the requirements differ greatly from one location to another. It could be a great DIY project or something your local carpenter could handle. Elevating the tent off the ground with a platform helps prevent algae and dirt from easily reaching the tent. Additionally, you might consider installing wooden poles around the platform, especially in very windy conditions. This could be a good choice, perhaps for some corners, based on your surroundings.
What precautions should be taken when constructing a platform for the tent?
If you create a platform, ensure its wider than the tent to prevent splashes from the ground. For wooden poles in the ground, a 30–50 centimeter platform around the tent should be fine. If you plan to attach guylines to the platform, you'll need about 150 centimeters around the tent or another way to secure the guylines.
Keep the fabric tight, but not too tight. The same applies to the guylines—they should have a bit of flexibility. Periodically check and replace them as needed.
Avoid placing your tent on the edge of a hill, whether it's big or small. Doing so can allow wind to sneak under and catch the tent.
We suggest using a Zip-in floor. This helps seal against the wooden deck or ground, keeping bugs and plants out of the tent.
Rainy weather?
Adapting to changing conditions is part of the challenge, and the more prepared you are, the better you and your Nordisk product can withstand.
Our tents are waterproof. Don't worry about the seemingly low water column. Cotton expands when wet, and our technical cotton effectively keeps water out. Our tents stand in various locations worldwide, and the only time they get wet inside is when someone forgets to close the door or window.
Windy weather?
On windy days, large tents face challenges. Their big surfaces catch a lot of wind, applying pressure on the structure. Usually, we suggest adjusting the center pole(s) when winds go over 15 meters per second. This helps the wind pass over the tent.
If the tent is set up with guylines around poles, it can endure much more wind than if a peg is being pulled from lose ground by the wind. Ensure your setup is securely fixed yet allows the tent some flexibility. A clean tent is stronger than a dirty one (refer to maintenance)
Sunny weather?
Sun can be harsh to guylines and fabric. Shadow from trees or other surroundings is to be preferred. The fabric has UV protection in it, but if you want it to last long, you can help it a little along the way by keeping out of the worst sun.
Moisty weather?
Algae grows in moist environments when it is also exposed to light and nutrients. If you have your cotton tent pitched for an extended period in high grass or near trees (algae are transported from trees and pollen etc.) chances are that algae will appear on the flysheet. It’s important that algae are not allowed to spread and grow on the tent, as it will dry out the cotton fibers as these cannot be restored to their peak condition again. To avoid this, keep the tent clean and make sure it is dried regularly.
If the algae appear, wash it off with a cotton wash ASAP and treat the cotton with a proofer afterwards.
Your tent is strong and can endure a lot. But there are a few things you can do, to help extending the lifetime of the tent.
Besides making sure it stands a dry as possible, in shelter for winds and shadow from hours with most UV, you can put in a cloth or leather to help prevent to friction between the fabric and the poles.
If you struggle with a lot of wind, you can insert at pole of sorts between the a-frame facing the wind direction and the top pole.
Make sure your guylines are still fresh, this will help the slider locking on to the guyline.
Screws connecting the guylines to the surroundings should be checked quite often. Wind can bend the screws. Make sure to use a disc or slant the screw enough for the guyline not to pop off under pressure.
We don't assist in decorating your tent(s), although we'd love to offer advice. However, we recommend using light-colored furnishings to create the right ambiance. Be cautious that furniture or items don't touch the tent's fabric sides as it can apply pressure, allowing water to seep through and causing wear on windy days.
Arrange larger items toward the back and lighter ones towards the entrance to create an open and inviting tent space.
For electrical needs inside, you can insert them where the tent flysheet connects to the floor. If there's no zip-in floor, utilize a door/mesh-window area for this purpose. You can set up lights, a fridge, heater, fan, cooking equipment, etc. If you have a tea-kitchen inside, ensure the boiler isn't in the same spot continually. Moisture from the boiler can keep the fabric damp and eventually lead to mold.
If you plan to use a stove in the tent for heating, our chimney exit solution allows flexibility in placement. However, take all safety measures, and ensure guests are aware of dealing with a hot stove in a tent. Adhere to fire regulations applicable in your area!
