What is a technical cotton tent?

Nordisk technical cotton is a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. The cotton breathes, which keeps the interior cooler on warm days and reduces condensation compared with fully synthetic fabrics. The polyester adds strength and keeps the weight down compared with pure cotton.

Is a cotton tent waterproof?

Technical cotton has a 350 mm hydrostatic head and is water-repellent rather than waterproof. When the fabric gets wet, the cotton fibres swell and close the weave. During the first minutes of rain a fine mist can come through, which is normal and stops once the fabric has swollen. Let the tent dry completely before you pack it away for storage.

Shapes and models

  • Asgard: the bell tent, in 7.1 m² (3 people), 12.6 m² (6 people) and 19.6 m² (8-10 people).
  • Alfheim: in 12.6 m² (6 people) and 19.6 m² (8-10 people).
  • Utgard 13.2: 13.2 m² for 6 people. The Sky version has a 180° opening.
  • Ydun 5.5 and Vimur 4.8 and 5.6: ridge tents for 4 people. The Vimur connects to the Midgard.
  • Midgard 9.2 and 20: group tents with an A-frame pole structure.
  • Vanaheim 24 and 40: 24 m² and 40 m² for large groups and events.
  • Asgard Tech Mini and Ydun Tech Mini: compact two-person versions.

Floors, cabins and extensions

Most of the large cotton tents can be fitted with a zip-in floor that keeps out dirt and moisture, and with sleeping cabins, such as the Asgard 7.1 Cabin for 2 people or the Alfheim 19.6 Cabin for 4 people. The Asgard 12.6 Wall Extension adds headroom along the sides. Pair the tent with a cotton tarp for a covered outdoor area.

Weight and pitching

Cotton tents are heavier than synthetic tents: the Alfheim 12.6 weighs 12.7 kg and the Vanaheim 40 weighs 55.2 kg. They are made for car camping, glamping sites and stays where the tent stands for days or weeks.

Care and spare parts

Dry the tent fully before storage to prevent mould. Pack sacks, pole sets, zip sliders and mosquito mesh for Nordisk cotton tents are found under tent spare parts, and floors and cabins under tent accessories. Nordisk's Care & Repair service repairs cotton tents.
